Eastern Alps
Eastern Alps stretch across Austria, northeastern Italy, eastern Switzerland, southeastern Germany, and northern Slovenia. The western boundary is defined by the line from Lake Constance to Lake Como, while to the east, they end at Vienna, beyond which the Carpathians begin. They have a symmetrical structure - the inner crystalline zone is surrounded by narrow slate bands and behind them, wide limestone bands (Northern Limestone Alps and Southern Limestone Alps). Compared to the Western Alps, they are lower, wider, and less compact. The highest peak and the only four-thousander is Piz Bernina (4049 m) on the border of Switzerland and Italy, but the most prominent is the Austrian Grossglockner (3798 m).
