Karwendel is one of the largest mountain ranges in the Northern Limestone Alps. It stretches along the border of Austria and Germany, predominantly in Austrian Tyrol, with a smaller part extending into Bavaria. The highest peak of the range is Birkkarspitze (2749 m with a prominence of 1569 m).

The range is composed mainly of massive limestone and dolomite massifs, creating long rocky ridges, steep walls, deep valleys, and extensive scree slopes. Despite being only a few kilometers from Innsbruck, Karwendel is one of the most pristine mountain areas of the Eastern Alps. A large part of the territory is protected within the Karwendel Nature Park, the largest nature park in Austria, which is home to chamois, ibex, marmots, and golden eagles.

Karwendel is a popular destination for mountain hiking enthusiasts. It offers long ridge hikes, challenging ascents, and unique views of the surrounding alpine ranges. Among the most famous spots are the alpine meadow Großer Ahornboden with thousands of old maples and the spring of the Isar River.

The King of Karwendel challenge will take you to twelve prominent peaks that represent the main mountain landmarks of this impressive range. Their ascent will allow you to experience Karwendel in all its diversity – from massive limestone summits to expansive ridges and some of the most beautiful viewpoints in the Northern Limestone Alps.

Peak features in the challenge:
- elevation above 2000 m
- prominence above 450 m
- there is a route leading to it, including unmarked paths or via ferrata
- ascent is not prohibited
