The Carnic Alps offer some of the most beautiful mountain scenery on the Austrian-Italian border. Along the more than 100 kilometers of the main ridge, grassy peaks, sharp limestone pinnacles, deep passes, and vast mountain plains alternate. The highest peak is Hohe Warte (Monte Coglians, 2,780 m), which is also the dominant feature of the entire range.

The Carnic Alps are exceptional not only for their landscape but also for their geological history. The rocks here are among the oldest in the Alps and hide a wealth of fossils dating back hundreds of millions of years. The First World War also left a significant mark here. Many ridge paths lead around trenches, tunnels, caverns, and military trails that still remind us of the former mountain front.

Unlike the more famous Dolomites, you can often experience peace and minimal tourists here even during the main season. The ascents lead through mountain meadows, scree fields, and airy rocky ridges, rewarding you with distant views of the Dolomites, Julian Alps, High Tauern, and other alpine ranges.

The most famous route traversing the entire range is the Karnischer Höhenweg, a ridge walk over 150 km long, which can be completed as a multi-day crossing of mountain huts.

Join the "King of the Carnic Alps" challenge and climb the most interesting peaks of this unique range. You will encounter technically easy hikes as well as more challenging high-altitude ascents that together showcase the diversity of the range.

Peak characteristics in the challenge:
- elevation above 2000m (only Poludnig has an elevation of 1998 m)
- prominence above 400m
- there is a route to it, including unmarked paths or via ferrata
- ascent is not prohibited
