Hoher Dachstein is the highest peak of the Dachstein mountain massif and the second highest mountain of the Northern Limestone Alps, as well as the highest mountain in Styria and Upper Austria, as the border between these federal states runs over the summit.

On the northwestern slope of Hoher Dachstein, about 2.5 km from the summit, lies Adamekhütte under the Great Gosauk Glacier.
