The hut was built in 1924 by a branch of the German and Austrian Alpine Club and is now privately owned.

It is located south of Hohe Dachstein, whose southern face rises impressively from here. Politically, it belongs to the municipality of Ramsau am Dachstein in the Austrian state of Styria.

Due to its easy accessibility, Dachstein südwandhütte is a very popular excursion destination for tourists and day visitors. At the same time, it serves as a base for climbing routes, as well as the Johann climbing trail in Dachstein-Südwand, one of the most challenging walls in the Alps.
