The Salzburg Slate Alps are located in the federal state of Salzburg and are characterized by their rounded peaks, vast mountain meadows, and long grassy ridges. Unlike the surrounding limestone ranges, you won't find steep rock walls here, but pleasant mountain hikes with stunning views of the Hohe Tauern, Hochkönig, Dachstein, and the Berchtesgaden Alps.

The highest peak of the range is Hundstein (2117 m with a prominence of 827 m), which is considered one of the best viewpoints in Salzburg due to its isolated position. At its summit stands the mountain hut Statzerhaus, and traditional alpine wrestling matches called Jakobiranggeln, which date back to the 19th century, are held here annually.

The challenge Salzburg Slate Alps will take you to the most significant peaks of this picturesque range. You can expect easy ridge hikes, long ascents, mountain huts, and unique views. Although most trails are not technically demanding, their length and elevation gain will reliably test the physical condition of every mountain lover. At the summit of Rittisberg, a lower peak with a viewpoint at 1562 m above sea level is selected (the nearby 3 m higher peak of the same name is in the forest without access and view).

Peak features in the challenge:
- elevation above 1500 m
- prominence above 300 m
- there is a trail leading to it, even if unmarked
- ascent is not prohibited
