The Alps stretch approximately 1,200 kilometers across 8 countries and collectively contain 60,614 named mountains, the highest and most significant of which is Mont Blanc (Monte Bianco) at an elevation of 4,808 m on the border of France and Italy.

Within the Alps, there are 34 sections as defined by the SOIUSA (International Unified Orographic Subdivision of the Alpine System).
