Located in the Swiss part of the Wallis Alps, in the Mischabel group, it is the third highest peak at 4327 meters (sometimes also stated as 4330 m). The first ascent was made on September 16, 1858, by Franz Andenmatten, Baptiste Epiney, Aloys Supersaxo, and J. Zimmermann.

The normal route starts at the well-known mountain resort of Saas Fee (1800 m) and leads through the Mischabel Hütte (3340 m) and the Hochbalmgletscher glacier to the Windjoch pass (3860 m). From there, it continues along the southeast ridge over the glacier and later rock to the summit (small cross). Full glacier equipment is required for the ascent.
