Dirruhorn / Dürrenhorn is part of challenges: 48 Swiss 4000ers, Alpine Four-thousanders
Dürrenhorn is part of the Nadelgrat ridge, which also includes Nadelhorn, Stecknadelhorn, and Hohberghorn. On some maps, it can also be found under the name Hobärghorn. Its prominence is less than 100 m. In terms of shape, it is unremarkable, resembling a mound with a flattened summit section. One noteworthy feature is its southeast face, part of the group of Alpine north faces. It rises 350 m with an average slope of around 50°. It may not be as tall and famous as its counterparts Obergabelhorn, Lenzspitze, or Gran Paradiso, but it is charming nonetheless.
It is a somewhat detached four-thousander located away from the busy peaks of Mischabel. Rather than serving as a standalone goal, it acts as part of the Nadelgrat ridge traverse. Behind the main summit, on the northern side, lies a smaller sibling, Klein Dürrenhorn, also known as Chli Dirruhorn (3,890 m). The classic route of the Nadelgrat traverse ends here.
This ridge should logically start from Lenzspitze, but for historical reasons, it is still classified within the Mischabel massif. These two peaks create a picturesque basin on the eastern side.
Lenzspitze, the northern terminus of the Mischabel group, along with the slightly higher Nadelhorn, serves as a connecting element between the Mischabel and Nadelgrat groups. Neither of these two impressive mountain groups includes a single three-thousander, but they do contain a total of seven four-thousanders. Lenzspitze, a steep, almost Gothic-looking tower, can be considered both the northern end of the Mischabel group and the eastern beginning of Nadelgrat. Geographically, Nadelgrat actually starts at Nadelhorn, but the exposed connecting ridge with Lenzspitze can be regarded as a logical continuation of Nadelgrat.
Nadelgrat:
- Lenzspitze (4,294 m)
- Nadelhorn (4,327 m)
- Stecknadelhorn (4,241 m)
- Hohberghorn / Hohbärghorn (4,219 m)
- Dirruhorn / Dürrenhorn (4,035 m)
Below the mountain lies the Riedgletscher glacier.
The mountain was first ascended on September 7, 1879, by Albert Frederick Mummery, William Penhall, Alexander Burgener, and Ferdinand Imseng.
