The concept was introduced in 1997 by Marek Więckowski and Wojciech Lewandowski in the magazine "Poznaj swój kraj". The Crown of Mountains Poland (KHP) was approved on December 13, 1997, at an extraordinary meeting convened by the editors of "Poznaj swój kraj", where the Club of Conquerors of the Crown of Mountains Poland was also established.

By promoting the idea of KHP, the editorial team of "Poznaj swój kraj" aimed not only to highlight the most famous mountains, led by the Tatras, through the popularization of many other attractive yet lesser-known mountain ranges, but also to thoroughly explore these areas of Poland – with their history, nature, geological past, and contemporary culture. To encourage the general public to conquer the KHP – which can be done at any time and in any way (on foot, by bike, or on skis) – the editorial team leading the Club of Conquerors (publishing club materials in every issue of "Poznaj swój kraj") organizes expeditions to individual peaks (there were 21 by the end of 2009), providing its members – subscribers of the magazine, among other benefits, a discount (30%) on accommodations in recommended lodging facilities.

As of January 2011, there were approximately 8,800 members in the Club of Conquerors, of whom more than 600 had already achieved the rank of Conqueror of KHP. There are many more Conquerors of KHP, but many people do not seek this formal recognition.

For the implementation of the Crown of Mountains Poland and the operation of the Club of Conquerors, the editorial team of "Poznaj swój kraj" received a special award in the VI. National Competition of Mieczysław Orłowicz for the best press releases, radio, and television broadcasts supporting Polish domestic tourism in 2007.

A total of 28 peaks.
