Aiguilles du Diable - Corne du Diable is part of challenges: 24 quatre-mille français, Alpine Four-thousanders
It is indeed strange, but none of the first ascenders attempted to traverse the entire series of five needles at once. After another two years, Armand Charlet leads the young American, Miriam O'Brien, and her compatriot Robert Uderhill (whom she will soon marry) on Aiguilles du Diable. When Charlet asks her, "So which one shall we do?", Miss O'Brien replies, "All the ones we can!", as she does not dare to say just "All of them". In twelve hours, they achieve the first complete traverse of Aiguilles du Diable, which is now one of the most beautiful classic routes in the Mont Blanc massif.
On this ridge, with no possibility of emergency escape, one is completely defenseless and finds oneself in a real trap in case of bad weather. Raymond Lambert, the famous climber from Geneva, cruelly learned this during his winter ascent in February 1936. He and two guides from Chamonix who came to his aid had to have several fingers amputated. To this day, this route has not lost its fame. It is one of the outstanding experiences in the life of every climber. Over the years, it has maintained a D+ classification. In Chamonix, no one takes it lightly, including the guides. Although the five needles are mostly climbed as a traverse, they can also be overcome via the Devil's Couloir, which is somewhat more difficult than the Gervasutti Couloir. No matter how one climbs Aiguilles du Diable, it will always be a magnificent experience – the quintessence of what connects a person and a mountain.
