About chalet Schreckhornhütte
Švýcarsko
Schreckhornhütte is a hut in the Swiss Bernese Alps. It is located at the lower end of the Grindelwald Glacier, 7 km southeast of Grindelwald, at an altitude of 2530 m. It is owned by the Basel section of the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC). Access can sometimes be a bit difficult due to frequent landslides.
The first hut near the current one was Schwarzegghütte at an altitude of 2520 meters. It was built in 1877 and expanded to 10 beds in 1886. When extensive reconstruction was necessary, Strahlegghütte was built in 1910 at an altitude of 2691 meters with 30 beds. Both huts remained in operation until 1949, after which Schwarzegghütte was closed.
In the winter of 1976/77, Strahlegg hut was severely damaged by an avalanche. It was provisionally accessible until 1980. About 100 m above the old Schwarzegghütte, a new Schreckhornhütte was built in 1980/81. In 1993, the army constructed a new entrance to the hut.
Capacity of 65 beds, winter room 20 beds. Access from Grindelwald takes 4-5 hours.
