Hörnlihütte is located at the lower foothills of the Hörnli ridge on the Matterhorn, serving as a base for climbers before their ascent to the Matterhorn.

The first Hörnlihütte was built in 1880 and had 17 beds. Since then, it has been expanded and rebuilt several times. In 1911, the local community in Zermatt built it next to the Hotel Belvédère (also known as Berghaus Matterhorn). Both were merged in 1987 and managed by the local community; since the last renovation in 1982, they have offered 170 beds. In 2012, the SAC decided to transfer Hörnlihütte to the citizens of Zermatt for a comprehensive renovation. The name Hörnlihütte has been preserved. From 2013 to 2015, the Belvédère was reconstructed, and a new extension was built. The original Hörnlihütte was dismantled. Hörnlihütte now has 130 places and is open from July to September.

After the SAC sold the hut to the locals of Zermatt in 2012 and it underwent reconstruction, prices have risen sharply. It is the most expensive alpine hut. Prices:

In the entire area around the Matterhorn above 2880 meters above sea level, wild camping and bivouacking are strictly prohibited. Offenders will be fined by the municipality of Zermatt up to 5,000 CHF!
