Capanna Marinelli is located in the heart of Parete del Rosa in one of the most beautiful and wildest environments of the Alps. It is surrounded by stunning glacial streams Nordend, Zumstein, and Gnifetti and is situated in a safe place, but very close to the Marinelli channel, along which avalanches and rocks often fall.
The hut was officially opened in 1886 and dedicated to Damiano Marinelli. The famous climber was overwhelmed by an avalanche during an ascent in the eponymous gorge in 1881. Eight years later, in 1889, Don Achille Ratti (who later became Pope Pius XI) left Capanna Marinelli and conquered Dufour from Colle Zumstein (later also known as Colle del Papa).
