The Oriondé Duca degli Abruzzi Hut (2885 m) was built by Mr. Amato Maquignaz and officially opened in 1929 in the presence of the Duke of Abruzzi. Since then, the hut, inherited by Gabriele and Antonio Maquignaz, Amato's nephews, has been alternately managed by their families. A new renovation, completed in 2012, aims to keep the spirit of the refuge untouched.
Excellent dinners, slightly weaker breakfasts, very helpful staff who opened up and provided a hearty dinner at half past ten at night upon our return from the Matterhorn, even though they had locked up and cleaned.
