The magical islet of Veruda near the city of Pula in southern Istria, with its former monastery and rich pine vegetation (including stone pines), will instantly captivate you. Fratarski otok, as the locals call it, has become one large paradise garden thanks to the monks. On the rocky shores to the west and south, you will find both safe access to the water and romantic, sheltered nooks for sunbathing, uninterrupted reading, and watching playful dolphins. You will be breathless at the unforgettable sunsets with the silhouettes of slender yachts returning to the safe harbor.
In summer, there is an organized camp connected by a boat line to the mainland, near the Bunarina harbor. The island is suitable for divers - there has been a Czech diving center here since the 1980s, run by the Hruška family from České Budějovice. The camp is part of an international scout program. The island has a municipal water supply and sanitary facilities, but there are no cars or electricity except for hospitality operations. There are volleyball, small football, and table tennis courts available. Under Bishop Ivan Andrije Balbi, there was a monastery of Observant Franciscans, and the Zadar Franciscan province established the monastery of St. Mary in the 18th century, which was closed in 1806. Since then, the island has also been called Fratarski otok.
