About peak Gunung Banda Api
Indonésie
Vrchol Gunung Banda Api was added here by Jirka Hruška.
Also known as Puncak Lewerani. Currently an inactive volcano and island in Indonesia, located in the northeastern part of the Banda Sea. The island is actually the protruding rim of a 7 km wide caldera, primarily composed of basalt and rhyodacite rocks. The volcano rises 1150 meters from the sea floor.
In local history and literature, this mountain was referred to by the Dutch as Boi Ijang (Hikayat Banda) or Ganafus. It is often called the "Etna of Indonesia."
The volcano is relatively active, with eruptions well documented since the late 16th century, as the island was an important location for Dutch and Portuguese spice traders. During this period, more than 20 eruptions were recorded, most of which were relatively weak, primarily of the Strombolian type. The volcanic center was the Gunung Api crater located in the central part of the island. However, in the years 1609, 1632, 1690, and most recently on May 9, 1988, eruptions reached much greater intensity, accompanied by lava flows and resulting in loss of life. Since then, no eruptions have been recorded.
