Neuschwanstein Castle, a monument in Schwangau, was built between 1869 and 1892 by Bavarian King Ludwig II in the style of neo-Romanesque architecture, inspired by medieval knightly castles. It originally stood on the site of the castle from 1090 "Castrum Swangowe" with the Vorder- and Hinterhohenschwangau castles, which were inhabited by the lords of Schwangau until 1536. In the 19th century, the castles were in ruins until Ludwig II began the construction of Neuschwanstein, spurred by visits to Wartburg and Pierrefonds Castle. The castle was built from bricks with limestone, sandstone, and marble and was largely completed by 1886, but the king only stayed there for 172 days. Ludwig II financed the construction from his personal fortune but went into debt, which led to his incapacitation in 1886. Just six weeks after his death, Neuschwanstein was opened to visitors and in 2024, it is among the most visited monuments in Germany with over a million visitors.
