About peak Mawenzi
Tanzanie
Vrchol Mawenzi was added here by Jiří Králík and info was completed by Jiří Králík a Martin Matějka.
Mawenzi is the third highest peak in Africa after Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya (50 m higher). Mawenzi is steep and pointed, rising into a series of summits along the north-south ridge.
The hardened lava of Mawenzi is quite fragmented. This, combined with the steep slopes, makes the ascent of Mawenzi extremely dangerous.
The highest point is Hans Meyer Peak (5149 m), first reached by E. Oehler and F. Klute on July 29, 1912.
The ascent of Mawenzi is not a 'regular tourist' route – it is a technical climb that requires climbing skills, equipment, and a permit from the national park.
