The castle first appears in historical sources in the name of Protivec of Herštejn in 1272, but it is unclear whether he was the founder of the castle or if he might have acquired it as a fief from the originally royal border castle. In 1328, the castle was purchased by the Palatine Count Henry of Bavaria, but soon returned to the possession of the Czech king, and just three years later, John of Luxembourg sold it for 300 grossi to Bishop John IV of Dražice, the owner of the nearby estate of Horšovský Týn. During the Hussite Wars, Herštejn was besieged and captured by the army of the town of Domažlice, but it continued to be used. Its end came in 1510 when it was besieged and taken by the robber knight Zdeněk Dobrohost of Ronšperk, after which the castle was demolished by the victors.
