In the 30s of the 14th century, Oldřich z Pluhu transformed the dilapidated castle into a significant noble residence. As a royal steward and favorite of King John of Luxembourg, he was richly rewarded for his services and could afford to establish a castle on an inaccessible promontory above the Střela River, along with a town below it. A generation later, the castle became the property of King Charles IV, with whom Oldřich's sons fell out, were militarily defeated, and forced to sell the strategically important residence to the monarch. Charles IV often stayed here and donated the castle's revenues to his wife, Elisabeth of Pomerania. Charles's son, Wenceslaus IV, mortgaged the castle, which then frequently changed feudal owners. Since 1609, a Servite monastery has stood in the castle complex, and a Baroque chateau has been there since 1705. Remnants of two cylindrical towers and remains of the castle walls have survived from the original castle. The castle ruins are freely accessible. (Mapy.cz)
