Bliggspitze is a mountain in the Kaunergrat ridge of the Ötztal Alps in the Austrian federal state of Tyrol. The summit has an elevation of 3,453 m and is covered by glaciers on three sides: Bliggferner (to the west), Mittlere Eiskastenferner (to the northeast), and Hintere Eiskastenferner (to the southeast).
Ascents
The usual ascents start from the Taschachhaus hut above the Pitztal ski area. These are glacier tours, combined with easy rock climbing in summer and winter. Bliggspitze is particularly popular as a spring ski touring destination when the loose snow turns into firm firn.
The normal route goes over the Sexegertenferner glacier, then steeply up the Ölgrubenferner glacier to the Bliggscharte saddle, continuing over the Bliggferner glacier to the northern ridge and then to the summit (3:30 hours). It is mainly used by skiers.
The southern ridge from the Sexegerten valley directly to the summit is an easy but long climbing tour suitable for summer (4 hours).
History
The first ascent was made by the famous climber and explorer of the Ötztal Alps, Theodor Petersen, and Alois Ennemoser on September 24, 1874. Their route is now considered the Normal route.
