The fortress standing on the hill above the town of Monfalcone near Trieste is one of the characteristic sites of this city. It is a massive tower with a square base, surrounded by a circular wall. This is followed by a moat and a circular rampart, which serves as a trail for hikers with several viewpoints overlooking the town and the industrial center with the harbor. The tower was built around 1420 and is in very good condition, despite damage during World War II. The surrounding area is characterized by numerous sites and caves, with finds from them on display at the Museum of History and Prehistory in Trieste.
