Teide is part of challenge: Highest Geographical Points of Europe
A volcano with active fumaroles, the highest mountain of Tenerife, the Canary Islands, Macaronesia, and Spain! Ascent is only possible with a permit, which can be obtained for free on the Ministry of Ecology's website (only 50 permits per day, often booked months in advance). A permit is required for both the ascent from the upper cable car station and for a full ascent, e.g., from the parking lot below Montaña Blanca. The second option is a paid ascent with a local guide - they can arrange a permit even if the public permits are already taken. The third option is a very early or very late ascent "illegally" - the ranger checking permits arrives on the first morning cable car (i.e., at 9 AM) and departs on the last cable car down (time depends on the time of year). A good option used to be staying overnight at the Refugio Altavista hut about 500 meters below the summit and making a morning ascent to the top, but the hut has been closed since COVID and may remain closed forever.
