Halda Ema (sometimes also written as Ema-Terezie or Terezie-Ema) is a conical heap in Ostrava with a summit at an elevation of around 315 m above sea level (formerly 325 m). It is located in the area of Slezská Ostrava on the right bank of the Ostravice River. It consists of millions of tons of waste rock from the Ostrava mines. The origins of its establishment likely date back to before 1920. The heap is still active, which is why white clouds of gas, primarily containing sulfur dioxide, emanate from it. Its surface is constantly heated by internal processes – temperatures inside the burning heap can reach up to 1500 °C. Due to these facts, entry is at your own risk.
