Corno Grande is part of challenge: Ultraprominent Europe
The highest mountain of the Gran Sasso massif and the entire Apennines, the sixth most prominent mountain in Europe! The most common access route leads from the Campo Imperatore saddle (where the Germans rescued the captured Mussolini in September 1943) via the Sella del Brecciaio junction, after which the ascent path splits. The normal route climbs the northern slope, while the more challenging and interesting Via delle Creste follows a relatively sharp ridge between the gentler northern and steep southern slopes. Just below the summit, both paths converge.
