The Bäregg mountain hut is located on the western slope of Mättenberg, high above the lower Grindelwald glacier. A visit to Bäregg is an enriching and interesting day trip that takes you through an area where the effects of glacier retreat are strikingly visible. The Bäregg mountain hut also serves as a starting point for alpine sport climbing on Hohturnen and for the ascent of Mättenberg. The Bäregg mountain hut was built in 2006 after the Stieregg restaurant was immediately threatened by a moraine landslide the previous year and could no longer operate. The Bäregg mountain hut has a legendary predecessor. About 120 meters lower, the first Bäregg inn was built in 1858. After the Bäregg inn was destroyed by an avalanche for the third time in 1940, it was never rebuilt. The ruins are still visible along the current path.
