The hut is located in the eastern group of the Glockners at an altitude of 2973 m, on the summit of Großer Burgstall, a cliff in the glacial landscape of Pasterze. Outside of the hut's opening hours, a winter room is available, accessible via an AV key, which members of alpine clubs can obtain from their section for a nominal fee.
The hut was opened on August 15, 1910, and is named after Thomas Oberwalder, who financed the construction of the hut and was buried in an avalanche on Pasterze in 1906. It was last modernized from 1982 to 1985. In collaboration with the Vienna University of Technology, a shell-shaped thermal protection concept was implemented to ensure frost protection in the innermost shell even in winter without heating. Mountain schools of the German Alpine Association and PES use the hut as a base for alpine training courses.
Capacity of 46 beds, Winter room 10 beds.
Access:
Franz-Josefs-Höhe via Gamsgrubenweg (2,312 m). Walking time: 2:30 and a new summer path, almost without glaciers.
