The Gonella Hut was renovated a few years ago (2011): it is now a modern shelter made of wood and metal. Located next to the Dome Glacier, the Gonella Hut is useful for climbers interested in ascending Mont Blanc via the Italian route, known as the 'Papa route'. The two-day trip is very long (8–10 hours of walking): you must be very fit!!! Elevation gain: 1,500 m. Duration: 8/9 hours
Access:
Park your car at the barrier in the Italian Val Veny and walk along the road to Lac Combal. Follow the marked path on the right that leads up to the grassy moraine on the right side of the Miage Glacier. It thins out quite a bit (an alternative path comes from the right) before you descend onto the remnants of the glacier. Go up the middle of a faint path with several cairns. Finally, just before the rock pillar, go up before turning right to find the path with ropes leading to the rock band and the hut. About 4:30.
