Active volcano, the highest mountain in Sicily and the second most prominent mountain in Europe! After a series of intense eruptions in 2024, the edge of the Voragine crater rose to 3403 m, the highest elevation in history.
The summit has been inaccessible since 2021. You can reach an altitude of 2500 meters individually (on foot or by cable car), and a mountain bus can take you to 2700 m, where the road ends and further access is officially prohibited even with a guide. Until 2021, the path led to the Torre del Filosofo plateau at 2900 m, but the eruption in 2021 covered this route with a layer of lava. Nevertheless, some tourists occasionally venture this way, and no one stops them. The highest semi-officially accessible point is the summit of the crater Cratere Barbagallo (2935 m), which is reached by a path from the upper cable car station.
