Currently the highest accessible peak of Etna. It is possible to go higher, reportedly up to 3000 m, but higher craters/peaks are no longer accessible, even with a guide (current status, which may change over time).
Near the crater (or connected craters due to gradual erosion) is the place Torre del filosofo (2920 m), where off-road buses used to go. Until recently, the upper part of a buried tower from 1960 could be found there, but it is now completely buried under volcanic rock.
Today (April 30, 2023), off-road buses end at Belvedere at an altitude of 2720 m. The former path around Torre del filosofo is no longer visible from this stop - it has likely been covered by new volcanic deposits. The path to Cratere Barbagallo is therefore not entirely straightforward and follows where the most footprints are. At the end of March, it was advantageous to walk over the crusts of frozen snowfields, as they are the easiest to traverse. Conversely, avoid areas where smoke is rising from the ground, as your steps will sink the most there.
