Register and log summitAbout peak Monte Somma
Itálie
Vrchol Monte Somma was added here by Martin Matějka.
The remnant of a large volcano that rose to a height of 2000 m 25,000 years ago, but collapsed into a caldera during several eruptions in the following millennia, from which the cone of Vesuvius grew after the famous "Pompeii" eruption in 79 AD, and the caldera rim was overtopped. Vesuvius now reaches 1281 m, and the highest point of the caldera, named Punta Nasone, exceeds it by 150 meters.
