Italian Vesuvius, an active stratovolcano (last eruption in 1944), one of the most famous volcanoes in the world. The base of Vesuvius is formed by the Monte Somma volcano, which has its origins tens of thousands of years ago. Today, the caldera of Monte Somma is filled, and the original mountain forms a ridge stretching from east to west, north of the Vesuvius cone. The summit is located on the northeast side of the crater, marked by a concrete pillar and is accessible with caution (and a bit of daring) via an unmarked path from the south.
