Alto del Chorrillo is located in the Andalusia region, in the province of Granada, Spain. It features one of the highest roads in the country.
The path to the summit, situated in the Sierra Nevada mountain range, is gravelly, rocky, pointed, and occasionally bumpy. In winter, it is completely impassable. A great trail for experienced wheelers. Avoid driving in this area if unpaved mountain roads are not your strong suit. Along the way, there are several alpine lakes. Drive carefully, as this is a mountain road with hairpin turns and dangerous descents.
The route to the summit is called Camino de los Franceses (also known as Camino del Mulhacén). It connects the summit of Veleta and the town of Capileira. It is 23.3 km long. A 4x4 is required. Stay away if you are afraid of heights. Expect the trail to be quite steep. Avalanches, heavy snowfall, and landslides can occur at any time, which is extremely dangerous due to frequent icy patches.
You can comfortably ascend this modest peak of the Sierra Nevada from Collado del Cascajar Negro (2574 m), where some minibuses ascend from Capileira and then just follow the trail.
A more beautiful and challenging ascent is from Trevélez (1530 m) along a lovely path with a steep slope. Then you can descend to Refugio del Poqueira (2500 m) for the night.
