Halda Hrabůvka, also known as Stará halda, is a spoil tip located in the southern part of Ostrava. The spoil tip served the Vítkovice Ironworks for storing waste from metallurgical production, primarily slag. In 2010, reclamation of the spoil tip took place. The area of the tip is 97 hectares. Halda Hrabůvka is freely accessible from the side of Hrabová. You just need to conquer a small hill, and then you can stroll across a flat and very diverse terrain. From forest paths to shrubs, grassy areas, and a newly built lake. This lake was created on the windward side of the tip as a sort of barrier. The tip still shows thermal activity, and the water surface is meant to prevent oxygen from reaching the coal spoil. The lake, which people nicknamed "Ostravské moře," covers an area of 4.5 hectares and holds 180,000 cubic meters of water, which was pumped here from the Ostravice River. The clear water in an attractive environment invites swimming. However, swimming is strictly prohibited in this technical reservoir. The immediate surroundings of the lake consist of steppe vegetation. From the top of the tip, you will not see any urban development, only the panorama of the Beskydy Mountains, another spoil tip on the horizon, and as a typically Ostrava bonus, the smoking chimneys of the steelworks.
