Türkensturz is an artificial ruin on a steep rock face in Gleißenfeld near Seebenstein in Bucklige Welt, Lower Austria.
The name originates from the time of the Turkish wars, particularly from the years 1529 (the first Turkish siege of Vienna) and 1532, when the Turks were in Pittental. There is no exact tradition regarding the origin of the name, but there are several sagas and legends surrounding it. One legend tells of a Turkish unit, allegedly belonging to the warriors of Kasim Bey, who rode after a girl on horseback. When she jumped aside before the abyss, the riders fell from the rock face. In another version of the same legend, this girl is the Virgin Mary, who suddenly vanished before the abyss, luring the greedy Turks to their doom.
Near the abyss, Prince Johann I of Liechtenstein had the artificial ruin Türkensturz built in 1824. Today, the area around the ruin is a popular excursion spot and part of the Seebenstein-Türkensturz Nature Park. The rock face is a prominent landmark on the southern highway.
The flora of the nature park is also remarkable. In addition to orchids, alpine violets, pasque flowers, and dictamnus - also known as the "burning bush" - grow here. The nature park is also interesting for climbers who feel at home on the via ferrata (difficulty level D) on the striking limestone cliffs in Pittental.
