Peilstein is part of challenge: Nej Dolních Rakous
The steep limestone mountain Peilstein in the southern Vienna Woods is 716 m high, located in the villages of Altenmarkt and Weissenbach east of Nöstach, and is popular as a climbing garden due to its steeply sloping high rock face that drops to the west. At the summit stands Peilsteinhaus of the Austrian Alpine Club, built in 1923 (originally private), on the hiking trail to Schwarzensee Peilsteinhut for nature lovers built after World War II.
The limestone rock wall near Vienna offers up to 850 routes of varying difficulty, from 3 to 11 UIAA. The rocks are divided into 26 sectors. Most routes are single-pitch (often long, around 40 m), but there are also two- to three-pitch routes. The grading is quite stiff; a 6 at Potštát is definitely not a 6 at Peilstein.
The limestone is mostly surprisingly good quality, non-chipping, and only slippery on heavily climbed routes. And by heavily, I mean really heavily. The rocks are often visited due to their location, more than is healthy. So, in the easier sectors, there is a solid crowd during the season. No wonder, it is a true climbing paradise here. The protection is exceptionally good, mostly every 2 meters, even on grade fours! Something absolutely unimaginable in the Czech Republic. As protection points, mainly bolts are used, so you can rappel from anywhere. You will encounter anchors rather rarely. Most routes have their rappel station, consisting of double protection, a chain, and a pig tail. Simply delightful. In short, on these rocks, there is about as much protection as on all Czech rocks combined. Beginners need not be afraid to head here.
