The foundation of Konopiště Castle was an early Gothic fortress from the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries, built in the style of a French château. The corners of the building were adorned with four towers, and three additional towers emerged from the façade. After Renaissance modifications, Baroque influences led to the reduction of the six towers to the level of the floors due to the diminishing defensive function.
Revolutionary changes affected the castle during the ownership of the heir to the throne, Archduke Franz Ferdinand d'Este. At his command, the castle was reconstructed according to the principles of historicizing romanticism, its surroundings were transformed into an extensive park, and the Rose Garden was created. The Archduke amassed a vast collection of valuable items at the castle, including an extensive collection of weapons and armor.
