The village of Mašun lies at an altitude of 1024 meters, embraced by vast, uninhabited Snežnik forests. These forests have retained their natural appearance, as they are far from settlements. Mašun is a crossroads of forest paths winding from Knežak in the Pivská basin, from Pudoba in the Lošská valley, around the Snežnik castle, and from Ilirská Bistrica through Zabič-Gomanci and Lesková valley. Thus, Mašun represents a kind of center among the municipalities of Ilirská Bistrica, Postojna, Cerknica, Pivka, and Lošská valley. A characteristic feature of the landscape is the endless forest of spruce and fir. In winter, the snow cover transforms the landscape into an idyllic, almost fairy-tale image, which can be admired during walks, on the toboggan run, or while cross-country skiing on groomed trails.
After winter in Mašun
In summer, when Mašun shines in an abundance of colors and forest scents..., we can admire the natural structure of plant and animal species that the Snežnik forests provide a home for. We can see the remnants of a hunting lodge owned by the Waldenburg family, or the preserved and restored tower. There are also hiking trails, an educational trail of the Mašun forest, and cycling opportunities; the more adventurous can embark on a four-hour hike to Snežnik, whose grandeur can also be observed from Anina skála in Mašun. Nature lovers can enjoy a picnic or visit a guesthouse renowned for its excellent hunting cuisine.
