Velika Planina is a karst plateau in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, southeast of Kamnik, covering an area of 5.8 km² and reaching an elevation of 1666 m above sea level at the summit of Gradišče. It is the largest high-altitude grazing plateau in Slovenia, known for more than a hundred uniquely shaped shepherd's huts. Natural attractions include the Velika and Mala Vetrnica caves. On the plateau, shepherds have built several settlements, which are now surrounded by forest and rubble. The oldest shepherd's hut was found in the 16th century. After a fire in 1944/1945, the Chapel of Mary Snow was rebuilt in 1988. A specialty of the area is the cheese called trnič. Since 1964, it has been accessible by cable car, with later additions of ski lifts, a two-seater chairlift (renovated in 2000), and a new six-seater chairlift in 2023. Velika Planina is a settlement with permanent residents and also operates a ski resort dependent on snow conditions.
