K2 is part of challenge: Eight-thousanders
The second highest mountain in the world and the highest in Pakistan. Known as Čhogori in Baltic and Qogir in Chinese. It is one of the most difficult eight-thousanders to access and the last one to be climbed in winter (in 2021). The first ascent was made by members of the Italian expedition Achille Compagnoni and Lino Lacedelli on July 31, 1954, with the second ascent occurring only in 1977. There are 10 climbing routes on K2, with the Abruzzi Spur being the standard route.
Notable ascents:
1. Without oxygen - John Roskelley and Rick Ridgeway; 1978
1. Czech - Josef Rakoncaj (and Agostino da Polenza); July 31, 1983 - bivouac at 8550m
1. Female - Wanda Rutkiewicz; 1986; without oxygen
1. Slovak - Peter Božík; 1986 (first ascent of the SW ridge "Magic line" without oxygen)
In alpine style, the first ascent was made in 1986 by Tadeusz Piotrowski and Jerzy Kukuczka (E face) and in 1991 by Pierre Beghin and Christophe Profit (NW face); both ascents are among the top performances in the history of mountaineering.
Josef Rakoncaj was the first and for 23 years the only person to summit K2 twice - in 1983 and 1986, each time via a different route and without oxygen.
