On a prominent ridge with traces of settlement (including fortifications) from certain periods of prehistory, a two-part fortified settlement was built around the mid-10th century, which formed part of the Přemyslid castle system. In 1265, Žatec was granted town privileges by King Přemysl Otakar II.
