Vrchol Puncak Mandala was added here by Jirka Hruška.
Puncak Mandala, also known as Mandala Peak (formerly Julianatop or Juliana Peak until 1963), is located in the Highland Papua region of Indonesia. With an elevation of 4,760 meters, it is the highest point of the Jayawijaya mountain range and is included in the group of the Seven Second Summits. After Puncak Jaya / Carstensz (4,884 m, 365 km to the west), Mandala is the second highest free-standing mountain in Oceania, Australasia, New Guinea, and Indonesia.
Locally, the summit of the mountain is called Aplim Apom, a sacred place where the creator Atangki created people, Aplim Apom Sibilki (children of Aplim Apoma). Under Indonesian administration, the mountain is referred to as Mandala Peak. Although the reasoning was not recorded at the time, the name Mandala corresponds to the creation myth of Aplim Apoma. The mountain is considered the center of the universe and a mythical place where Atangki resides.
Mandala is one of three high mountain massifs in Western New Guinea, along with the Carstensz and Trikora complexes. This peak used to have an ice cap, but it was last seen in 1989 and disappeared by 2003. Based on data from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission, this peak is likely higher than Puncak Trikora, which lost its ice cap around 1960.
Due to its remoteness and the difficulty of access, Mandala (like many peaks in New Guinea) has been climbed very rarely. Climbers from the Dutch expedition to the Star Mountains successfully reached the summit on September 9, 1959.
Austrian climber Christian Stangl summited Mandala on February 28, 2012, during his attempt to become the first person to climb the Seven Second and Seven Third Summits.
The first Czech climber reached the summit of Mandala in 1998.
