On a rocky hill above the confluence of the Buna and Drin rivers stands Rozafa Castle, one of the most iconic landmarks of Albania. Its foundations date back to the 4th century BC, when it was built by the Illyrians as a strategic fortress, similar to the Berat castle in southern Albania. Today, it offers not only breathtaking views of the city of Shkodër and the Albanian Alps but also a journey into history. Inside, you will find remnants of a Venetian tower, several courtyards, a monumental stone wall stretching around the entire hill, the ruins of a church transformed into a mosque, and a museum. The legend of Rozafa, a woman bricked into the castle's foundations to ensure the structure's stability, adds a powerful story of sacrifice for future generations.
