Košťál is part of challenge: Czech Volcanoes
The former volcano with the ruins of Košťálov Castle is a prominent landmark of the town of Třebenice and is the southernmost castle of the Czech Central Highlands on its rising edge. The castle walls are relatively well-preserved, which distorts the fact that the castle is in a state of disrepair and pieces of masonry are falling off. From the summit, there are beautiful views of the surroundings, both of the slopes of the Czech Central Highlands and of Hazmburk and Říp. It is worth a visit to enjoy the scenery.
Due to its geological arrangement, where the less resistant breccia forms the foothills, while the stronger trachybasalt and basalt cliffs make up its upper part, a distinct rocky peak has developed, which sets Košťál apart from most of the surrounding rounded hillocks. On the steep rocky slopes, one can observe irregular, plate-like, and columnar rock separation. The lower parts of the slopes are covered with boulder flows and heaps, where landslides occur.
