Stirling Castle stands atop Gowan Hill. Nearby, the famous Battle of Stirling Bridge (1297) took place, where William Wallace led the Scottish forces to victory over the English. The wooden bridge was destroyed, splitting the English army and making it easier to defeat them. On the nearby Abbey Craig, Wallace's Monument now stands, commemorating his courage and fight for Scotland's freedom.
