Granatspitze (3086 m a.s.l.) is a mountain that gave its name to the Granatspitze group in the Hohe Tauern, the alpine backbone of Austria. Despite the fact that several peaks in this group are actually higher, such as Stubacher Sonnblick, which is less than a kilometer to the north and two meters taller, Granatspitze is less frequently visited due to the difficulty of the ascent compared to its often-climbed neighbor. The steep summit block of this prominent peak is made of granite.

Ascent:
The easiest ascent starts from the Rudolf Hut [de], initially heading west towards the Granatscharte notch, then turning south before it and continuing along the eastern ridge (Ostgrat) to the summit. This route takes about 3 hours and has a climbing grade of II-. Another option is the North Ridge (Nordgrat) with several towers or rock towers (Grattürme), but this is more difficult, although still II-. The South Ridge is also an option, especially from the East Tyrolean side. You can reach it from the Karl Fürst hut, an emergency shelter west of Stubacher Sonnblick, across the Prägratkees glacier, which has several difficult crevasses in the Untere Keeswinkelscharte notch (II-).
