Grosser Hundstod is part of challenge: King of the Berchtesgaden Alps
Großer Hundstod is an impressive mountain in the Steinerne Meer and lies on the German-Austrian border (the border runs directly over the summit - but this usually has no practical significance other than that you need to carry identification.)
This peak towers above the wild and primordial plateau of Steinernes Meer ("ocean of stones") and above most other peaks in this part of the Berchtesgaden Alps, and will be visible from all surrounding valleys with its characteristic panorama - wide and calm like a dog's head from the north and south (perhaps from here the strange name: "dog's death").
According to legend, Watzmannsage, a cruel king ruled here, who was cursed one day and turned to stone. His dogs are said to have perished during the great dog death.
The ascent is via the normal (southern) route (from the Ingolstaedter Haus), is not demanding (a few meters UIAA I) and well marked. Many people climb this beautiful peak, primarily for the fantastic view.
On clear days, the summit offers an impressive panoramic view. To the north is Hoher Göll, to the east Teufelshörner, to the southeast Hochkönig and the rest of Steinernes Meer, to the south Zell Basin and the High Tauern, to the west Loferer Steinberge and Kaiser mountains, and to the north Hochkalter and Watzmann.
Many spend several days traversing Steinernes Meer, which is a highly recommended tour.
There are many other climbing options, but all require some familiarity with the rock or effective climbing skills. There are also more difficult routes, but few climbers come to this mountain (perhaps because the access is quite far).
Hundstod is always a great and rewarding venture, especially in combination with the described traverse. For a single ascent of Grosser Hundstod, you should allow at least one day, better one and a half days with an overnight stay at Ingolstaedter Haus at 2119 m
