Vigla is the highest peak of the Kerkis massif, the island of Samos, and the South Sporades archipelago in the Aegean Sea. The summit is flat, offering panoramic views, and on clear days, you can see the surrounding islands. During the ascent, you can admire the geological diversity of the massif and the mountain flora depending on the season.
There are three marked trails leading to the summit, all challenging in terms of elevation gain, terrain, navigation in the alpine section, and heat. It is better to start the ascent in the dark (or finish in the dark when guided), bringing enough water, food, and a windbreaker (it is windy at the top). The most common route is from Kampos Marathokampou via the abandoned Moni Evangelistrias monastery. This path only has annoying gravel sections. Absolutely spectacular, but much more challenging is the "panoramic" route from Kallithea via the cave church of Panagia Makrini. The path is not secured, although it would be helpful in some places. From the path near the church, you first ascend a steep rocky cliff. The trail then continues along a sometimes narrow and quite exposed rocky ridge with several smaller ascents. The last part of the route on the main massif is already a walkable path. The rock is non-slippery when dry, with plenty of holds in the cracked surface, although in a few places, the surface is unstable. Very strong winds can be dangerous here, making movement difficult and carrying away items (such as unsecured glasses). It is recommended only for experienced and well-equipped hikers; for descent, it is better to choose another route.
