A massive steep peak above the Biafo Glacier; one of the most difficult summits to reach in the world. The first to stand on the summit in 1977 were the English climbers Chris Bonnington and Doug Scott as part of a six-member expedition progressing in alpine style. The entire endeavor, especially the descent, is recorded among the top moments in the history of extreme high-altitude mountaineering. After many days of effort and a challenging ascent to the summit, Scott broke both his ankles at around 7000m, and Bonnington later broke two ribs; the journey back to base camp took them, along with two other climbers from the group, a week, during which they faced almost unrelenting storms, with sporadic supplies of fuel for making tea and, in the last days, essentially no food. Scott was lowered on a rope, and in milder sections and on the glacier, he crawled on his knees. This was followed by a long wait in BC for help, which the remaining two members of the expedition went to alert in distant civilization. The next successful ascent to the summit was only allowed after 20 (!) unsuccessful attempts in 2001, and the third and so far last took place in 2012.
